Il y a parfois des rencontres évidentes, débarquant de nul part et emmenant quelque part, qui se font avec une simplicité étonnante. C’est de ce genre de rencontre qu’est née ma collaboration avec Jonathan Edzant, jeune artiste de 25 ans originaire de San Diego en Californie. Plantons le décor de cette rencontre atypique. Nous sommes en mai 2018, je suis assise avec mon mari à une table en terrasse de notre café favoris en plein Los Angeles. Nous travaillons tous les deux sur des éditions de photos et article de blog. Concentrée, je remarque tout de même le top model qui s’avance sur le trottoir à quelques mètres de moi, suivi par son photographe au sourire pour le moins communicatif. Ils m’intriguent, me font quitter des yeux mon écran quelques instants, curieuse de les observer shooter. Les poses s’enchainent, semblent très naturelles, l’ambiance me paraît californienne au possible. Tout ce que j’aime. J’interpelle mon mari Olivier qui observe alors également la scène. Quelques secondes plus tard, je me lève, vais aborder le photographe et son modèle leur disant que le résultat de leur travail sera sans doute vraiment cool et que j’aime l’ambiance qu’ils sont entrain de donner à leurs images. Charles, le mannequin, me répond avec un accent français. J’apprend alors qu’il vient de France et qu’il est modèle professionnel notamment ici à Los Angeles. Jonathan, d’un enthousiasme débordant m’explique à son tour qu’il vient de San Diego et me donne en moins de temps pour le faire que pour le dire, son compte Instagram, témoin du travail très moderne du jeune homme. Je tombe sous le charme de son style tellement californien.
Nous échangeons nos numéros de téléphone, nos réseaux sociaux et nous promettons (à l’américaine! Comptez 10 promesse pour qu’une se réalise!) de nous revoir pour un jour shooter ensemble. Je ne savais pas à cet instant que ces mots lancés en l’air se concrétiseraient quelques mois plus tard.
Novembre 2018. Me voilà de retour à Los Angeles pour 1 mois seule en ville. Jonathan et moi n’avons jamais perdu le contact et avons même crée un lien plutôt très sympa via nos Instagram respectifs. Il sait que je suis là et nous avons d’ores et déjà planifiés de shooter ensemble à L.A. si il y vient, ou à San Diego, dans sa ville, dans le cas contraire. C’est finalement bien chez lui, à San Diego qu’aura lieu ce shooting fantastique sous le soleil réchauffant de ce frais début de décembre californien. (Frais = 20 degrés hein… Faut pas déconner! 😉 )
Le rendez-vous est fixé ce lundi 3 décembre dans un café de la périphérie de San Diego. J’y retrouve Jonathan, le sourire et l’énergie tout aussi lumineux que lorsque je l’avais rencontré la première fois. Nous commandons un chaï à emporter et roulons jusqu’à la vieille ville.
Old Town San Diego semble sortir tout droit d’un décor de cinéma. Vieilles baraques western, immenses cactus à tous les coins de maisons, drapeau américain flottant dans le vent et chemin poussiéreux, tout y est pour plonger le visiteur dans une ambiance digne du grand ouest, teintée des couleurs du Mexique (dont la frontière est à tout juste 30km).
Ce sera ici que nous créerons ensemble de nouvelles images pour mon blog et mon Instagram. J’ai prévu 3 tenues. Nous démarrons avec cette combinaison kaki vintage de l’armée américaine que j’ai déniché quelques jours plus tôt chez un fournisseur de surplus de l’armée à Los Angeles (un vrai coup de coeur!).
Jonathan me met immédiatement à l’aise. Je n’ai pas l’habitude de shooter avec quelqu’un d’autre qu’Olivier et suis habituellement très directive dans mes shootings. Je suis soulagée de remarquer qu’il me laisse libre de mes mouvements et ne prends pas le contrôle sur ma liberté d’interpréter le moment. C’est ma crainte habituellement avec les photographes. Qu’ils me demandent des trucs kitchissimes que je n’ai pas du tout envie de faire! 😉
S’en suit 1h30 de shooting, 2 changements de tenues, de rires, de recherches, d’exclamations et de complicité. Je découvre un jeune homme dont « étonnant » n’est que le prénom. Et alors qu’il se met spontanément à chanter dans la voiture, (et me cloue le bec par sa voix), j’apprend qu’il est en fait comédien et chanteur depuis son plus jeune âge. « J’ai découvert mon amour pour le spectacle quand j’avais 6 ans et que mon père m’a convaincu de chanter « I believe I can fly » (du controversé R.Kelly!) et de faire des claquettes au show des jeunes talents de mon jardin d’enfants. » me confie mon ami. Le garçon mord alors à l’hameçon et enchaîne les auditions pour des compagnies de théâtres de San Diego. Aujourd’hui, Jonathan peut se targuer d’avoir participé à plus de cinquante comédies musicales. Et quand je lui demande d’où lui est venu la passion pour la photo, il me répond que sa sensibilité pour l’image est sans doute du à l’univers de la scène qu’il foulait étant gosse. Les lumières de couleurs, les stroboscopes, les effets des machines à fumée… Depuis toujours, ces éléments le fascinent et sont à l’origine, il en est persuadé, de sa passion pour l’art visuel.
Et puis il y a aussi ces souvenirs d’enfance… lors de randonnées avec ses parents, et qu’ils prenaient des photos de fleurs, d’arbres et de l’Océan à chaque pas, ou presque.
Enfin, à 22 ans, un cap est franchit lorsque sa grand-mère chérie lui offre comme cadeau pour sa remise de diplôme, son tout premier appareil reflex professionnel. S’en suit des mois et des mois de shooting et d’apprentissage.
3 ans plus tard, Jonathan en est là. A un niveau professionnel. Son site Internet et sa page Instagram témoigne du talent de cet artiste pluridisciplinaire et bientôt incontournable de San Diego.
Il est 16h, déjà l’heure de se dire « A bientôt ». Je dépose Jonathan sur le parking du café où on s’est retrouvé ce matin. Une longue route m’attend pour rentrer à Los Angeles. J’invite Jonathan à me prévenir si il souhaite venir un jour découvrir la Suisse. Ses yeux s’illuminent instantanément. Il me confie que visiter l’Europe est un de ses plus grands rêves. L’idée de photographier de nouveaux paysages, notamment, l’enthousiasme immensément.
Pour financer ce voyage, Jonathan souhaiterait réaliser des shootings avec des locaux qu’il bookerait en amont. Donc sachez-le, si vous n’avez pas prévu de voyage en Californie, et que vous êtes intéressés par un shooting de vous seul, ou en couple, avec votre famille ou vos amis, afin d’obtenir des photos avec cette touche californienne unique, l’opportunité est là!

There are sometimes obvious human encounters, landing from nowhere and taking somewhere, which being created with an amazing simplicity. From this kind of encounters was born my collaboration with Jonathan Edzant, a 25 young artist from San Diego, California. Here’s how it all unfolded:
Back in May, 2018, I was sitting with my husband, editing photos for a new blog article on the outdoor patio of my favorite coffee shop in Los Angeles. While focusing on my work, I noticed, out of nowhere, a male top model and a smiling photographer walking on the sidewalk a few feet away from me. I couldn’t resist to take my eyes off the screen to watch their photoshoot! I was super intrigued by his professional vibe, his quick and natural posing, and also obsessed with the California ambiance and styling of the shoot. After a few minutes, I couldn’t resist my impulse to get up and walk over to the model and photographer to say hi. I told them that I was already convinced that the final images from the shoot would turn out stunning! Charles, the model, thanked me in a French accent. I found out he is indeed from France but is currently working as a full-time model in Los Angeles. Jonathan, the photographer, explained that he is from San Diego, just visiting LA for some photoshoots. Before I knew it, we began exchanging Instagrams and contact info. I end up making a tentative plan to meet Jonathan again for my very own photoshoot with him when I come back to the US for my next upcoming trip to California! I got so excited. I had fallen in love with his enthusiasm and his modern/colorful photography aesthetic! But in that moment I had no idea that a shoot together would actually become a reality.
Fast forward to November 2018 when I had my solo month-long trip back to Los Angeles. Jonathan knew I was back in town because we had kept in touch through Instagram. Finally it was time to set up our long awaited photoshoot! Ultimately we decided to shoot in his hometown in sunny San Diego (20 degrees celsius, no joke)!
Our rendez-vous was planned for Monday December 3rd. We met up near his house at a modern coffee shop called Copa Vida, and I was greeted by Jonathan with the same energy and bright smile that he had the first time we met. We ordered chai lattes to go and carpooled down to Old Town. It was finally happening!
Old Town San Diego seemed to look like a scene straight out of a movie set. With old western houses, huge cacti, dusty roads, and US flags flying in the wind, everything had the tone of the wild west decorated with Mexico’s colors. It was only fitting, being that we were just 20 miles away from the Mexican border.
Our collaboration was ready to begin! I had brought multiple outfits, but Jonathan helped me choose a few that felt most complementary to the Old Town setting. We started with my vintage green US Army jumpsuit, which I had found earlier that week at an army surplus wholesale store that I’m obsessed with!
I was so relieved that Jonathan was able to make me feel comfortable in front of the camera immediately. I’m not used to shooting with photographers besides my husband Olivier, and in our shoots I tend to do most of the directing. Even though Jonathan took initiative to direct some of my poses, he had no problem letting me move around myself and interpret each moment as well! I’m beyond thankful that he gave me the freedom to be myself and pose in ways that felt natural for me. Not feeling like myself is always a fear of mine when shooting with photographers other than Olivier. But this was not a problem with Jonathan, yay!
An hour and thirty minutes went by fast, with two outfit changes, lots of laughter and so much fun. I can honestly say I have discovered a young man who is a true creative and artist. After we wrapped up the shoot and drove to get lunch, I caught him spontaneously singing in the car. He amazed me with his voice! I found out he had been singing and doing musical theatre for most of his life. He said he started loving the performing arts ever since his dad persuaded him to sing “I Believe I Can Fly” at his kindergarten talent show. Since then he has performed in over 50 musicals spanning from elementary to high school. When asked where his passion for photography came from, he explained that it had been a hobby since the age of twelve, and that his love for the visual arts developed over time through watching and performing in live theatre. While he got tremendous pleasure from singing, dancing, and acting in front of audiences, he also loved the special effects stuff like fog, strobe lights, and colorful changing lights. It was his appreciation for these elements that helped him develop an eye for photography. The moment he received his first professional DSLR camera from his grandmother as a college graduation present, he became obsessed, and started shooting nonstop for the next several months.
Shooting with him three years later was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! It was clear to me how talented and genuine he was, and getting to witness his creative process in action fused with his contagiously positive energy was unforgettable.
Right before the sad realization hit that it was time to leave Jonathan and drive back to LA, I mentioned to him that I would be so happy if he came to visit me in Switzerland one day. His eyes lit up immediately. He told me that he’s never been to Europe and had been dying to go for years. The thought of getting to travel and photograph people in new landscapes excited him so much. So PSA!
